In a bid to provide skills and Job opportunities for Sierra Leoneans in the country, the Institute of Advanced Management and Technology (IAMTECH) has introduced in their curricula the study of Mining and Petroleum.

This was made public on Saturday 20th April 2013 at the institute’s campus kissy Dockyard during their congregation for the conferment of degrees, diplomas and certificates.

The Principal of the Institute, Dr. (Mrs) Abie Paula Kamara, said they introduced the Mining and Petroleum course to provide Sierra Leoneans with the appropriate training for various jobs opportunity in the lucrative extractive industries. She said there are 60 students registered for the programme, adding that her institution is now partnering with the Agenda for Prosperity in educational development.

She said any tertiary institution which does not embrace change will end up producing unmarketable graduates to a very skill-demanding and competitive job market. She said an educational institution can be relevant to the society it serves only if that institution is flexible and remain sensitive to the aspirations of the society. She stated that after 180 years of university education, the country can’t produce enough middle level man power personnel, noting that skilled people from Ghana, Senegal and other countries have to be employed in the Mines and road sectors for jobs meant for Sierra Leoneans.

“It is for this reason IAMTECH started the school of mining and petroleum few months ago,” she said, adding that the beauty of Sierra Leone and its citizens in the Agenda for Prosperity tomorrow should start today. She noted that Mining and Technology has given prosperity to the people of Europe and Asia but very little to Africa, and that if the country is to enjoy similar prosperity coming out of Japan and Singapore then technology and middle-level man power training must be given the place it deserves.
However, Dr. Paula Kamara said her students are denied right to government grant-in aid on the notion that IAMTECH is not a government institution.

“Yes, IAMTECH is a private institution, but its students are not private; they are Sierra Leoneans whose parents pay tax to government,” she said. She called on parliamentarians and the government to look into the issue in fairness in order to address the problem.

According to the Principal, IAMTECH, which is an affiliate to Njala University, has more than 1000 students enrolled for various fields of study. There were 455 graduates (147 under graduates degrees and 308 diplomas) at this year’s graduation ceremony.

Meanwhile, Dr. Paula Kamara noted that they are in need of laboratory equipment to support the mining and petroleum programmes. She also said the Amphitheatre needs to be expanded, and appealed to government and donors to render support.

Prof. Felixtina Jonsyn Ellis, deputy vice chancellor Njala University, said she noticed there are few female graduates in the degree programmes, saying that if women want to close the gender gap then they should exert more effort in the area of education. She called on men to empower their women by supporting them academically. She urged the women not to fight for 50/50 as not everything men do women can do, and that female students should not stop at first degree or diploma levels. She added that the primary role of tertiary institutions is to produce educated and skilled men and women in response to the needs of the country and the rapidly demanding challenges of the world. She also said that tertiary institutions all over the world are very mindful in setting standards in the fulfillment of their primary role, adding that they are delighted about the strides IAMTECH is making in expanding its portfolio of academic programmes to meet the demands of the country. She assured that Njala will continue to monitor the standards attained in each of the programmes.

“We are expecting IAMTECH to maintain standards,” said Prof. Ellis, and called on universities to take science and technology- the driving force of modern development- seriously. She said for a country to move forward people should maintain high standards in all they do in society. She called on students to respect authority and the existence of others.

Mamoud Tarrawally, Deputy Minister of Education, expressed hope that the graduands will contribute to human capacity in the country and appealed to government and donors to assist the institution to expand. He said he believes if the institution gets the required support, it will do more in the area of education.

Mr. Jalloh said that in early 2007 he procured 1100 cartons of Sky batteries from Deepak Commercial Brokage L. L. C based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, but realized upon supplying his customers that all the batteries were damaged.

He said after he cleared his container from the Queen Elizabeth II Quay and supplied his customers in Bo, Kenema and Kono, he was later informed that the batteries were not in working order and were all consequently returned to him. He added that he informed the Secretary of the Deepak Commercial Brokage about the problem who in turn informed the business owners in Dubai. He said Deepak contacted Mining and General Services Ltd or Lloyd Agents, an Insurance Company, to conduct an investigation into the matter. He added that the insurance company conducted the investigations and discovered that the batteries were damaged and reported their findings to Deepak. He said after receiving the report from the insurance company, Deepak sent him an email telling him that they would send 400 cartons for him free of charge and another 700 cartoons as loan. He said after he received the email, he contacted his lawyer Jenkins-Johnston who advised him to take legal action against Deepak. He said he sued Deepak Commercial Brokage in 2007 but since then the case is just dragging on with no end in sight. He said the matter has taken six years in the high court, and noted that since the case started in 2007 about three judges have presided over the matter. He said his lawyer has done everything within his power to ensure that he gets justice but the court keeps on adjourning the matter.

“Imagine for someone to be out of business for six years,” said Mr. Jalloh.

He said things have gotten worse as his bankers, who loaned him the money to invest in the battery trade, have taken him to court for default in repaying the loan.

“The bank is now considering selling my properties to reclaim their money,” Mr. Jalloh lamented.

Mr. Jalloh said he has many children some of whom are supposed to be in college but because he is no longer in business they are not going to school or university. He said he has written a letter to President Koroma appealing to him to use his good office to ensure that he gets back his money from Deepak through the court but he did not know if the president has received his correspondence.

He said he has confidence in the judge who presides over the case as he has been told that the judge stands for justice.

“I have to meet my friends to assist me solve some minor family problems,” said Mr. Jalloh, adding that he is looking forward to the adjourned date of 1st May, 2013 to see whether he will see the end of the matter.

According to investigations in 2007 Lloyd’s Agents in Sierra Leone were requested by Deepak and Mr. Amadu Jalloh to conduct a survey into 1100 cartoons of Sky Super Dry Battery R20 UMI, Size: D1.5 which he (Amadu Jalloh) imported from Dubai and on arrival in Sierra Leone found to be below acceptable quality.
“Our findings which are recorded in our Report NM2/2007 reveal two categories of damage to the cargo,” the reports states.
It also found out that 200 cartoons battery when tested in torch had low power and produced very dim light, while 900 cartoons were completely damaged and when tested had no power and no light was seen.

The insurance company recommended that both categories of batteries should be written off as total loss.

In an exclusive interview with SierraLeoneHub, Chief Jusu confirmed that the last armoured tank has finally left the shores of Yenga and that Yenga is no longer under occupation. He explained that before the final withdrawal of the Guinean tank and soldiers into Guinea he, together with some stakeholders in the Chiefdom, went to Gheguedou in Guinea where they held a meeting with the Guinean authorities who assured them that they were going to withdraw their arms, ammunitions and tanks from Yenga. He added that they agreed that both Sierra Leonean farmers and Guinean soldiers desist from farming in Yenga until the two leaders come out with a final declaration of ownership. He said it was also agreed that the Guineans soldiers should not harvest the farms they had left until the handing over of the place is finalized by the two governments, adding that he had sent report to President Koroma informing him that the Guinean soldiers have vacated Yenga.

“So we are waiting to hear from our president,” he said, adding that President Koroma has fulfilled what he promised the Yenga people, which was to redeem them from occupation. He said as of now the people are doing their normal business in and around Yenga without harassment from anybody. He said only civilians are now seen in the village.

When asked about the economic importance of Yenga, the Chief said he would not disclose that lest the Guineans decide to reoccupy the village. Yet he revealed that there are precious things in Yenga and that was why the Guineans soldiers occupied the territory in the first place.

He said Koindu town was empty because many people refused to settle there for fear of war between the two countries, stressing that Koindu, which was once the bread basket of the country, has deteriorated to ashes. He said now that the occupation has ended, Koindu would soon reclaim its old glory.

Meanwhile, Chief Jusu highlighted the burning issue of unemployment among youths in the chiefdom.

“I am appealing to the government to provide job opportunities for our young men and women,” he pleaded, stressing that there are no NGOs operating in the chiefdom. He noted also that some politicians were saying that Yenga would not free but they (pessimistic politicians) have been proven wrong.
Fiyia Kobulo, a driver, said that he was happy about the development and confirmed that Guinean soldiers are no longer visible in Yenga. He said Guineans and Sierra Leoneans from each side of the Moa river conduct business. He said some Sierra Leoneans wanted to take revenge on Guinean civilians but he warned them not to do that. He said they have started farming but on a subsistence basis because the authorities have not yet given the go ahead.

In the village of Yenga, Nyuma Tengbe told our reporter that he was not feeling happy because his village was under occupation. He said they were treated like slaves by the Guineans soldiers as they (villagers) were not allowed to express their opinion. He added that they are expecting to reclaim their farms and would soon start working.

For Seven years in succession, Sierra Leone has failed to submit reports to the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Committee on Expert on ILO conventions, which it has ratified.

According to the Officer-in-Charge at ILO Sierra Leone, Munya Hove, government should be reminded of its obligation to submit yearly reports to ILO.

The International Labour Standards Specialist, Cecile Balima-Vittin, said failure to report means no available information on the country’s legal framework which makes it difficult for the committee to assist, evaluate and assess. She said this puts Sierra Leone in a very peculiar situation. However, she expressed hope that government will take the necessary steps without delay to submit all the reports and information due on the ratified conventions, in accordance with its constitutional obligation.

The Labour Standard Specialist said it is not only about submitting report but also submitting quality report.

The Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Security, Augustine Nyuma Kortu said: “Sierra Leone has not submitted a single report on the 30 conventions out of the 35 that we have ratified. Sierra Leone has not reviewed its labour laws for the past 30 years.”

He admonished labour stakeholders to be able to submit at least four reports by the end of August this year and another four by February 2014.
“Let us set ourselves targets and deliver on those targets,” he said.

The Commissioner of Labour in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Ahmed Musa, promised that they will meet this year’s September deadline to produce the report.

The ILO conventions which are referred to as core labour standards which Sierra Leone has ratified include: Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise Convention, 1948 (No. 87), Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining Convention, 1949 (No. 98), Force Labour Convention, 1930 (No.29), Abolition of Force Labour Convention, 1957 (No.105), Minimum Age Convention, 1973 (No. 182), Equal Remuneration Convention, 1951 (No. 100) and Discrimination (employment and Occupation) Convention, 1958 (No. 111).

The Environment Protection Agency (EPA), in collaboration with the Open Government Initiative (OGI), has just ended a week sensitization tour in Kailahun district on the dangers of deforestation and rampant burning of coal.

Abu Syl Kamara, deputy director of EPA in charge of field operations and extension, said the whole exercise started two years ago when they held meetings with the leadership of the Councils and Paramount Chiefs. He explained that the economic activities of the people are impacting on the environment, adding that it is time to ask the people to use the God giving land prudently and in a sustainable manner.

“People should not abuse the natural endowment God has given us,” he said, adding that the people in Kailahun district know a lot about the environment.
H
e said the people know that deforestation and rampant burning of the forest is responsible for the changes that have taken place in the weather condition in the country.

In Koindu, the EPA deputy director urged the people to engage in inland swamp farming. He also said that those who depend on cutting down of forest for their livelihood should limit their activities, and they should also replace every tree they cut down by planting another. He called on farmers to engage in Cacao farming, saying that a lot of people have abandoned their farms and plantations for shorter means of making money. He told the gathering that the EPA would discuss with the forestry department in the Ministry of Agriculture to see how best they would assist in providing seedlings for people wishing to replant trees. He also said that those who use charcoal to cook should use gas cooker as an alternative. He explained that in order to minimize the burning of coal, the EPA has partnered with the National Petroleum which has introduced cooking gas for users of coal. He stated that it is the high demand of charcoal in the big towns and cities that are responsible for the massive burning of coal. He said that if people in the cities and town minimize or even stop using coal to cook then the burning of coal would be reduced.

He further explained that there is a program which is called the Reduction of Emission through Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) which will start paying people who preserve their forests.
“The discussion is on a very advanced stage to actualize the REDD program,” he said, noting that they visited about eight Chiefdoms in the Kailahun district and other villages.

Fatmata Bakarr Sesay, Information, Education and Communication Officer of EPA, told the people that adverse weather condition in the country is as a result of deforestation in the country. She said massive cutting down of trees through logging and coal burning is depriving people from enjoying the natural beauty of the atmosphere. She also explained that the chemical which is called Mercury used by gold miners is very poisonous and that it contaminates water and it can kill slowly. She also said that the increase of heat in the country is as a result of the destruction of the ozone layer which is responsible for protecting the people from exposure to direct heat from the sun. She added that the emission of smoke from the burning of coal causes harm to the atmosphere.

“You need to protect the environment so that your children and grand children will benefit,” she said, stressing that deforestation is responsible for the shortage of water in the country. She noted that deforestation has made both rivers and water wells to dry up. She also added that there are no trees that block heavy wind that is why sometimes many houses are destroyed by heavy wind.

The Vice President of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commission (ECONEC), Dr. Toga Gayewea Mcintosh, has said in Freetown that the commission would work hard within the sub-region to ensuring that they mitigate electoral violence and to also enhance political dialogue for the greater good of every citizen in the respective countries.

Vice President of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commission (ECONEC), Dr. Toga Gayewea Mcintosh

Dr. Mcintosh gave the assurance during the official commissioning ceremony of the ECONEC Secretariat in Sierra Leone, which was held at the National Warehouse of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), 15 Industrial Estate, Wellington, Freetown. He said the secretariat was the engine that would certainly generate the necessary synergy among all the stakeholders within the respective members’ State. He informed that the managers and key actors of the secretariat were expected to set the agenda for continued maintenance of peace, security and for upholding democratic values in West Africa.

He said that they would give full support to the secretariat to grow and to perform its tasks adequately.
“Our commissions are the same,” he said. “We work to keep the region safe from all forms of electoral induced conflict and bring sustainable development to the member States.”

He said they would work ‘tooth and nail’ in order to see that democracy flourish out of the walls of the secretariat and over flow for the realization of humanity. He said the President of ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, was unable to witness the ceremony because of an urgent official engagement which came up unnoticed.

“Personally, it is delightful to be back in Sierra Leone on business that would strengthen governance, security and development in our Sub-region,” said Dr. Mcintosh. He said he was in the country five months ago to monitor and also witnessed the re-election of President Ernest Bai Koroma. He said the atmosphere during his stay was remarkable, peaceful and indeed pace-setting. He further reiterated that the ceremony was not only historic, but it symbolized a giant step towards regional cooperation in the sub-region.

The Sierra Leone Police has today lifted the ban on the planned Kao Denero’s ‘Back To My Roots’ album launch at the National Stadium in Freetown.

This follows repeated appeals to the Government of Sierra Leone by entertainment stakeholders, including a public apology and acceptance of responsibility from the US based Sierra Leonean hip-hop rapper.

The show has now been rescheduled for the 4th of May 2013.

The original show was supposed to have taken place on the 6th of April 2013, but a violent promotional rally on the eve of the event forced the Police to institute a ban until further notice.

The Freetown Most Wanted rapper appealed on radio in the morning hours to all his fans to refrain from violence and lawlessness. He said his music doesn’t preach violence but inspiration. He said his music gives hope to downtrodden to believe that they can grow from nothing to something.

He commended and thanked the Government and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) force for lifting the ban.

“God has given me another chance,” said the controversial rapper.

The Attitudinal and Behavioural Change (ABC) Secretariat is to hold a one day seminar for public servants on Thursday, April 18th, 2013 because public servants are the ones that are responsible to trigger development in the country, it said.
According to the Director of the Secretariat, Dr. Ivan Agibola Thomas, at a press conference last week, if Sierra Leone was to prosper, the attitudes of public servants needed to be shaped in a way that it would push forward the country’s development goals.
He emphasised that the seminar was also important because public servants were responsible to take care of public interest, adding that there was need to capacitate public servants in order to build strong institutions in the country.
Dr. Ivan also disclosed that in 2013 the Secretariat worked on the theme ‘Working towards Strong Prosperity with Positive Attitude’. “This is because we have to develop positive attitudes for us to prosper,” he said, adding that it becomes very hard to prosper when people have wrong attitudes.

He noted that a key issue that would be dealt with at the seminar was the need for public service institutions to be committed individually and collectively. The seminar would also focus on youths as they were the ones to provide the workforce and commitment.

The ABC Director also said that the seminar would also look into the health sector in the country, because health was very important to every nation and that they would also launch the ABC Magazine during the seminar.

The Second-in-Command of the ABC Secretariat, Madam Nanette Thomas also disclosed that they were going to establish four ABC pilot schools for positive change in each of the four regions as part of their programmes for 2013. She said that the schools had already been identified. “We are going to train them and from time to time we will visit them,” she added.

The schools came under the Secretariat’s radar because the ABC had clearly noticed that there were evidences of negative systems which were responsible for a lot of the problems in the schools.

Madam Thomas also said that they were also going to target all the three arms of government, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and the Freetown City Council on the issues of positive attitudes.

The Secretariat also noted that from its previous workshops it was realized that the fight against negative attitudes in the country has to start from the top to the bottom because those at the higher offices have the best means of command.

The Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, Mr. Theo Nicol, advised that in a bid to strongly affirm the fight against negative attitudes in the country, it would be good if civic education was re-introduced in the educational system.

The minister said with that, Sierra Leoneans would know the meaning and essence of the national flag, the national anthem, what is citizenship and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

Sierra Leone’s sensational rapper Amara Denis Turay aka Kao Denero has once more formally taken the blame and apologised to the people of Sierra Leone and to all the victims of his ‘Back to My Roots’ rally on Friday, 5th April, 2013.

At a press conference organised by United Sierra Leonean Initiative on Friday, 12th April, 2013 at 14 Small Waterloo Street, Freetown, in the presence of some of the identified victims, the King of Freetown said: “I want to sincerely register my deep regret and apologies to both the Government and People of Sierra Leone who may have been affected by this incident or otherwise who may have been offended by any statements or comments, following the incident.”

The King of Freetown was on the verge of launching one of the biggest albums in his musical career in which he featured Jamaican star, Busy Signal, in the song titled ‘Ghetto Struggle’. Unfortunately, the rally was mired with violence, thieving, looting and molestation of innocent civilians. Consequently, only hours to the event at the National Stadium on Saturday, 6th April, 2013, the Sierra Leone Police banned the concert from going ahead.

However, Kao Denero denied having any hands in what happened on that day saying that he couldn’t in any way condone violence and lawlessness since he came from a humble background. He added that he would not be a party to any group to disturb the peaceful life of citizens.

“The ugly situation may have been caused by a small minority of misguided and foolish gangs who infiltrated and hijacked the purpose of our peaceful event,” he stressed. “It is my goal to pursue these gangs and bring them to justice, in order to avoid a recurrence,” he vowed, and promised to work very hard to transform the mindset of young people who were unemployed and engaged in criminal activity.

He said the surest way of eliminating gangs was to discourage children from the fancy of gangs. He said that was why he decided to launch a charity called ‘Mama Nor Dae Na Hose Pikin Foundation’. He moaned that 70% of the proceeds from his banned launching would have gone to address the plights of young people.

Kao Denero disclosed that he never intended to stage a rally because he never wanted anyone to mess up his concert, because he was here for business. He said it was for all those reasons that he came to the country unannounced to avoid being welcomed by a multitude of fans which could have also led to unrest. He revealed that he even turned down a request to join a masquerade on Easter Monday based on the same precaution.

He said the rally happened due to the desire of his sponsors, Africell, to get mileage out of the partnership, and that to him was normal since they were a business. He said Africell applied to the Police for permission and 150 police officers were recommended to provide strong security for the rally. He maintained that he used the route designed by the Police.

Meanwhile, Kao Denero appealed to the Government and People of Sierra Leone for a reschedule of the launching of his album. He said music was his life and that was what he was living on.
The ‘Freetown Most Wanted’ star promised that his team would work hard to stage a violent-free musical concert.

“With all due respect, I believe President Koroma encourages the youths, he cares for us and right now this is the test of time,” Kao Denero

“I will work with the Police to respect law and order and I will employ an independent security firm to work closely with the Police,” Kao Denero promised, adding that no gang or person with reckless dressing or behaviour would be allowed to attend the show.

He said he believed entertainment plays a great role in society as it provides employment, excitement to the youths and engages the minds of people for which former President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah encouraged the youths to sing if that was what would disengaged their minds from war.

“With all due respect, I believe President Koroma encourages the youths, he cares for us and right now this is the test of time,” he said. He reiterated that the youths needed jobs, and they wanted their entertainment industry to strive and they wanted to see their favorite artists perform.

On the issue of whether he felt rejected in his own country, he said anybody who had spent so much time on his work, and more especially when he was working very hard to project the good image of Sierra Leone, might feel rejected or even more than that in such instance.

He added that it was in the interest of promoting the image of Sierra Leone that he went as far as Jamaica to feature Busy Signal. He said though he felt very bad because his concert was cancelled at the eleventh hour, he still remained to be a patriotic Sierra Leonean. He said what happened was above him and his fans.

“The answer for all that is with God Almighty,” he said.
One of the traders at Abacha Street, Adama Bangura known as ‘Tablic’, denied any wrong doing orchestrated by the Kao Denero fans during the rally, but she would not vouch for any wrongdoing outside Abacha Street.

She said when she saw the crowd on that Friday, she asked and people told her that it was Kao Denero’s rally. She said she told some of her friends that she was a supporter of LAJ because he used red as his colour.

Madam Adama added that she stood by her goods to protect them, but she felt relieved when the first batch of supporters was singing that Kao Denero said no fighting. She said some traders were about to pack their goods when the boys began chanting: “We are not going to steal; Abacha Street girls are our wives!”

She said she was surprise to hear when she returned home that mobile phones and goods were snatched from people at Abacha Street on that day by the Kao Denero fans.

Mr. David Sesay, President of the Sierra Leone Bike Riders Association, noted acts of violence and stealing on that day. “I encountered the crowd at Mountain Cut Junction, and somebody attempted to take my phone from my pocket,” he disclosed, adding that he fought hard and prevented his phone from being stolen.

Mr. Sesay furthered that he blamed Kao Denero because he was the organizer of the rally.
“He might not be the one behind all the bad things, because there are people who are always waiting for such opportunities to go on the rampage,” he noted. He also said that such things do occur even with them the bike riders whenever they had programmes.

Mohamed Alicious, a disabled activist who was also a victim of the Kao Denero-Africell rally, said he was at Ecowas Street on that day when he saw the crowd and he too was very eager to see Sierra Leone’s acclaimed rapper, Kao Denero.

“I went closer to the crowd to see him, and in the process of shoving I lost my Smart phone,” he narrated, adding that that was the only situation that he encountered and he was assisted by some boys to get him out of the crowd.

Mohamed Murtala Kamara, a stakeholder in the Sierra Leone music industry and a member of the United Sierra Leonean Initiative, noted that there was a big problem in our society “Young people take advantage of public events to attack peaceful Sierra Leoneans and take their properties away,” he stressed.

He also said that situations like that were really unfortunate for the organizers. He said even if it was a religious rally that was staged, there would still be people who would go on the rampage to attack peaceful citizens. “So it is not only limited to LAJ and Kao Denero” he stressed.

He added that the Kao Denero situation happened most of the time which indicated that there was a real problem in our society that we needed to find a solution to once and for all.
